Marcel Duchamp famously said that a “title is an invisible colour”—and it’s a colour that, for better or worse, wiggles its way into even the most resistant artworks.”

Although it is now considered the norm, the convention of giving titles to artworks has long been challenged by artists.

All the artwork in this exhibition has a title, however, the exhibition itself is left completely open to the interpretation of the viewer....

LIFE…

Life is what defines us and what drives our actions and behaviour everyday. It is a constantly shifting landscape that can be both volatile but also provide complete stability when required. As artists the subject and meaning of Life often provides for both the underpinning and the narrative. What are we seeking to say and why?

This dynamic and varied exhibition invites painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, installation and mixed media submissions and is a showcase of some of the most exciting artists from across the country and beyond.

All work will be for sale, making the Annual Open a perfect opportunity to discover new artists or invest in well-known names.

A selection panel assessed over 500 works to make the final exhibition.

The panel included Academicians' President, Fiona Robinson PRWA, RWA Academicians; Sarah Gillespie, Dorcas Casey, Nicholas Turner and Hamish Young, alongside Mark Golder (collector and benefactor, Golder Thompson Collection), Sue Hubbard (Art Critic, poet and novelist) and invited artist, Matthew Burrows MBE (founder of the Artists' Support Pledge).

The RWA is a Charity

The Annual Open reflects the RWA’s ongoing commitment to championing world-class art in the region and creating opportunities for new and emerging talent. Income from submissions is a vital source of support for the RWA, an independent charity (1070163), in order to maintain its historically significant building, present its ambitious programme of exhibitions and deliver creative opportunities for young people and adults across Bristol.

RBA 2022

The Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) was founded in Lincoln’s Inn Fields on May 21st 1823 by a group of painters. The Society began with just twenty-seven members under the Presidency of Thomas Heaphy, plus a complement of five Honorary Members and it took until 1876 for the numbers to reach fifty.

The Society was granted its royal Charter in 1846 but it was not until Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee Year of 1887, under the leadership of James McNeill Whistler, that the Society won the right to the prefix ‘Royal’.

Over the years, the Society has attracted many painters and sculptors of note including Walter Sickert, Philip de László, LS Lowry, Henry Moore, Peter Greenham, Sir Roger de Grey, Carel Weight and Colin Hayes. In 1970 the RBA transferred its assets to become the main contributor to the Federation of British Artists at Mall Galleries.

Edith has 2 pieces in this prestigious annual exhibition which features artwork by both selected artists and members of the RBA.
